The denim guide
Denim, considered.
The difference between a good pair of jeans and your favourite pair is often the fit.

Start with the rise
The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband. A high rise sits nearer the natural waist; a mid rise sits lower. Compare measurements with a pair you already enjoy wearing rather than relying on the label alone.
Straight, wide or relaxed?
Straight-leg denim keeps a relatively consistent width from knee to hem. Wide-leg styles add volume through the leg. Relaxed styles allow more room through the seat and thigh. Baggy cuts take that ease further; a belt can define the waist without removing the volume.
Balance the proportions
Try wide-leg denim with a closer-fitting tee or a shorter jacket. A loose shirt works too: tuck part of the hem to make the waist visible. For straight jeans, experiment with both streamlined and oversized layers.
Get the length right
Try jeans with the shoes you intend to wear. A longer hem creates a break over the shoe; a cropped hem leaves the ankle visible. Check care labels before washing or altering: denim can change dimension after laundering.
